Winter Hydration for Dogs: Why It’s Important and How to Keep Your Dog Hydrated

Discover the Importance of Hydration For Your Dog During the Winter Months

Learn how to help keep your dog hydrated this winter

Why does Hydration matter in the Winter?

In colder weather, your dog’s body still loses water through everyday activities like breathing and panting—sometimes even more than in summer, as their body works harder to maintain a stable temperature. Indoor heating, while keeping us cozy, can create dry air that leads to quicker dehydration for both you and your pup.

Staying hydrated supports your dog’s:

  • Joint Health: Water keeps joints lubricated, reducing stiffness and promoting ease of movement, especially important for older or arthritic dogs.

  • Digestion: Proper hydration ensures smooth digestion and nutrient absorption.

  • Skin and Coat: Dry winter air can make your dog’s skin flaky and their coat dull, but adequate hydration helps maintain healthy skin and a glossy coat.

How to Tell If Your Dog Is Dehydrated

Even mild dehydration can affect your dog’s well-being.

Watch for these signs:

  • Dry or sticky gums

  • Sunken eyes

  • Loss of skin elasticity (pinch the skin on your dog’s back; it should snap back quickly)

  • Fatigue or lethargy

Winter Hydration Tips for Your Dog

Here are some simple ways to ensure your dog stays hydrated all winter long:

  1. Providing Room Temperature Water

Water that is too cold can lower your dogs core body temperature. Although dogs love to eat crunchy snow, eating too much snow also uses up their energy and could make them sick.

  2. Incorporate Wet Food or Broths

If your dog eats primarily kibble, consider adding wet food or mixing in low-sodium bone broth to boost their fluid intake. This is especially helpful for dogs that are reluctant to drink as much water in cooler weather.

  3. Monitor Activity Levels and Adjust Accordingly

While many dogs are less active in the winter, hydration needs can vary based on factors like breed, age, and activity level. Keep an eye on their water consumption and adjust as needed to match their daily routines.

  4. Invest in a Good Humidifier

Dry indoor air from heating systems can lead to water loss through evaporation and contribute to dry skin and nasal passages. A high-quality humidifier not only keeps your home more comfortable but also helps maintain your dog’s hydration by improving the moisture levels in the air.

Additional Considerations

Make sure your dog always has access to fresh, clean water and don’t forget to clean water bowls regularly to avoid bacteria buildup!
